MATH212 - Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra

Advanced Calculus

Dr Paddy Ewer (ewerp@ukzn.ac.za) - Room 109 B, Admin Building

Linear Algebra

Prof Mike Henning (Henning@ukzn.ac.za) - Room F35, Science Bldg

 Lectures (Physics Lecture Theatre 2):

                    Monday Period 4

                   Tuesday Period 7

                   Thursday Period 4

Friday Period 7

Tutorials:     Thursday 14.10 - 16.45, F15

Tests:          February 25 (Calculus), March 25 (Calculus), April 22 (Linear Algebra).

Calculus will run until 23 March and Linear Algebra will follow.

Assignments and quizzes may also be given.

DP Requirements: 35% class mark, 80% attendance at tutorials.

Attendance at tutorials is compulsory and late arrival will be regarded as absence. Leaving before work is done will also be regarded as absence. Too many absences will result in loss of DP.

LINEAR ALGEBRA

We will be using the following textbook for the Linear Algebra part of MATH212:

Name: NINTH EDITION Elementary Linear Algebra

Authors: Howard Anton and Chris Rorres

Publisher: Wiley International Edition

ISBN: 9780471449027 (soft cover)

The Van Schaik bookshop on campus has a limited number of copies (40) in stock (price R424.95).

The library currently has only one copy of the textbook which has been placed on short loan. Students may take the book out for one-hour slots, but unfortunately the book is required to stay in the library. This book is used by most universities in South Africa, and it is highly recommended that students purchase a copy. The first three chapters provide an excellent reference of work covered in the linear algebra part of MATH140.

There will be an (optional) extra tutorial on Tuesday 20 April in Period 6 (12h20-13h05) in Room F47 on the 1st Floor should you have any questions on the work to covered in Test 1. The lecture on Tuesday 20 April in Period 7 (13h15-14h00) will be replaced by a tutorial as a final chance to ask any questions you may have when preparing for Test 3. Please take full advantage of this extra help offered.

Solutions for Test can be found by clicking here

Please read through these solution carefully for two reasons: First, it shows the amount of detail required. Secondly, it shows how to write the mathematics correctly.
